I admire your optimism which is a privelege that your youth grants you - hold on to it. Having left Zimbabwe and in 1999 SA in my wake, I unfortunately don't share your rose tinted view on things. It is not by choice that I have spent the last 8 years in the UK instead of living the lifestyle that we should be able to live in SA, but the crime levels are so prohibitive that a huge majority of Saffas in London won't go back.

Many of us have been enormously successful here and could quite literally come back there to retire, but knowing how our hard earned affluence would attract the violent crime even more, we are forced to evaluate Aus or similar as final destinations which sucks.

Like most people, my wife and I were victims of crime and the apathy and corruption of SA officials annoys us. Having looked at both your and crimeexposa website, I have to say the latter gets my vote.

Sadly, whilst their approach is extreme and perhaps vindictive, it also grabs headlines and has been splashed across the pages of the TNT expat magazine in london today and will be read by at least 2,000,000 Southern Hemisphere expats and Londoners. It will unfortunately take more than just hoping and imploring an ambivalent government to do something, so maybe the corrupt SA "politicians" might act when their tourism revenue stream proves difficult to pilfer because it has dried up. I wish you luck and hope you can stay crime unaffected, but I think your naivity is misguided. there are many of us here that want to come home - we're just not willing to die for the privelege, so bring on the drastic measures!

Yes, I agree with S, Jefferies, UK letter..I shudder to think of whats going to happen in 2010 as there is no decent transport system in place here. The trains are dangerous to go on and so are the 'mini bus taxi's' They do intend to put a 'Rapid Transport bus system ' in place but nothing has happened yet as the 'mini bus' taxi industry wants the transport all for themselves and is going to cause 'chaos' if they dont get their way. How on earth can we have an attitude like this as visitors will be stranded, robbed and harrased in all directions. I hope the town fathers sort this out solidly and quikly. (The 'big stick approach is the only solution I think!!) "Sigh"

As I am a student, I don't have much time, apart from my holidays, to do research and write articles. I would appreciate if volunteers e.g. blog owners, freelance journalists or criminologists would allow me to place their articles (credit will be given to the author). Articles just need to be in line with the mission of the website (see About). Contact me

A country at war with itself: Antony Altbeker

Getting behind the statistics to offer a sober and sobering account of the scale of the crime problem and its evolution, the book describes how government has sometimes sought to deal with the crisis and sometimes sought to deny its existence. The book ends with some suggestions of what needs to be done to deal with this scourge. Buy
