Crime Expo SA didn't expose the truth PDF Print E-mail

This article provides some conclusive evidence that the Crime Expo South Africa (CESA) website that went offline in December 2007 contained content that was either entirely fictional, or misrepresented to the extent that it could lead potential tourists and investors to have a skewed impression of the country. This article raised some serious questions about Crime Expo's integrity, and whether they should have been taken seriously. My website was started in reaction to the CESA website which was launched in July 2006.

The following map appeared under Crime Expo's "STATISTICS" section:

South Africa has an annual murder toll of 20 000 people. Thus, with a population of 45 million the murder rate is 44.44 people per 100 000 per year. According to the map, SA has a murder rate of 121.91 people per 100 000 per year.

Mr Watson responded to above-mentioned letter. He said amongst other the following: I will suggest that you include arrangements, should one of you or both get slaughtered or executed (happen to international tourists daily). You have to ensure that your insurance pay for the transfer of a body/bodies from SA to Italy. It will make things easier for your grieving families back home. CESA was formed to do what is morally correct: To inform tourists by bringing you directly in contact with ordinary South Africans:

If Crime Expo SA was about exposing the truth, one can expect of Mr Watson to supply at least some of the names of international tourists "slaughtered or executed" daily. The embassies of the relevant foreign countries from which these tourists came would've be able to supply the names.

This article, posted on the website, made false claims about the South African Parliament, misleading visitors, since it is actually an urban legend - pertaining to the 535 US State Congress members in 1999.

Proof that above-mentioned article is based on an American urban legend (Source):

I sent Mr Watson the following comment, but he didn't post it on his website:

"According to the American CIA, Israel has a population of 6,2 million. Lebanon a population of 3,8 million. That gives you a total population of 10 million. South Africa has a population of 47 million.

There are 55 killings per day in South Africa compared to the 42 in Israel and Lebanon when in war. So when you compare South Africa with Lebanon and Israel, you'll find that that they're as an average 368 percent more dangerous than South Africa.

In Lebanon 39 per day in that week. Thus, it was 1026 percent more dangerous in Lebanon than in South Africa.

By placing false information on this site you'll definitely damage the credibility of it. I accept South Africa has an unacceptable violent crime rate, but by spreading false information and say South Africa is more dangerous than Israel and Lebanon in war... is not the way to do it."

In the light that Neil Watson would appear later the day on Irish radio, I decided to post a comment which told that South Africa was voted the #1 long haul destination in 2004 by the Irish. He didn't placed my comment.

After I read this letter I decided that it would be a great idea to support Thamsanqa, after 30 odd people insulted her. It took me some time to compile the following mail, which I sent to Mr Watson, but again, he didn't placed it on his site. My mail read as follows:

"Agree with Thamsnaqa: You simply can't compare South Africa's murder rate etc. with USA or UK . In a country where 27% is jobless, where 15% works in the informal sector and where 50% live below the poverty line... SA is also the 9th (out of 180 countries) most unequal society in the world. It's also a fact that nations in change has more violent crime.

O yes, I don't deny the fact that SA's violent crime is unacceptable and that the government is not doing enough, but I really think that we have to be realistic e.g. if Washington D.C. has the same murder rate as South Africa, don't be surprised if Johannesburg's murder rate is also high. In fact, if you take Cape Town's murder rate, you'll see that it's on par with Washington D.C. And then you can also see that the vast majority of murders happen in places tourist will never ever go to. This site "expose" violent crime, but really, give NO statistics about tourist murders etc. So as a tourist visiting this site.. it has no reliable information. I read on an independent website that in 2001, 98% of tourists left SA with no experience of crime - compared to the 97,3% of Australia/Sydney in 2005. Whatever you may read in that stats... It's obvious that this site put people under the wrong impression. Surely, SA's crimes is as an average much more violent than Australia 's, but our amount of crimes aren't necessarily so much higher. I do hope though, that the government use the 2010 World Cup to sort out our problems regarding safety."

Mr Watson told people that they kill you amongst other at any of our beaches. Did it also refer to 20 of South Africa's beaches that received Blug Flag Status in 2006? (Source) Blue Flag gives local and foreign visitors the knowledge that their beaches are clean, environmentally sound and adhere to international safety and other tourist standards. He also says that "many people visit South Africa and some end up in the cargo section of the aircraft". Does it also refer to the several hundreds of thousands of Australians that visited South Africa between 1995 and 2003? According to the Australian Institute for Criminology, of the 158 Aussie tourists that have been killed in other countries, not a single one of them were in South Africa. (Source) 93 701 Australian and New Zealand tourists visited South Africa in 2004 alone. (Source)

It's obvious that tourists and investors were being mislead on the website. How will South Africa ever be able to eradicate unemployment without foreign investment?

I am glad this site was removed, it sensationalised crime to the point where most people were too scared to come to our lovely country. To say they have a right to publish untruths is rather pathetic and intollerable as I am sure these people agreeing with CESA would be the first to sue for defamation of character had they been a victim of published untruths.

Irrespective of what comparisons were made - the crime being commited and the manner in which it is commited in RSA is unacceptable!

I think people should be free to choose to read CESA. Perhaps not everything on the site was completely accurate, but hey, can we use the same comb for our daily media? Are we going to shut them down too? Closing CESA is another nail in the coffin for freethinking individuals. Better make sure you keep your nose in the right place.......look what happened to the Scorpions.......Eish!

I see that Mr Uys, a former CESA team member, is now co-leader with the National Party (NP) which relaunched last month. They contest the 2009 election on a strong anti violent crime ticket according to the nationalparty.co.za website. I will vote for the NP as I was and stay a CESA supporter!
Unecessary!

Hello, I used to read the news on SA because there are a few in my town with whom I chat with, one of them mentioned the way are Media in the UK lavished praise on Nelson Mandela but seemed to ignore the fact he ran a terrorist campaign, we now have a statue of him outside our parliament against the wishes of the UK people. My point is really simple weather or not Mr Watson was putting up truth or fiction there are plenty of sites to look at and he is entitled to his opinion, taking down the website because it was possibly effecting Tourism is ridiculous. They asked his opinion and he replied, maybe it was a little over the top but still if people do not have due diligence that is there problem. It is a disgrace that CESA was closed.

As I am a student, I don't have much time, apart from my holidays, to do research and write articles. I would appreciate if volunteers e.g. blog owners, freelance journalists or criminologists would allow me to place their articles (credit will be given to the author). Articles just need to be in line with the mission of the website (see About). Contact me

A country at war with itself: Antony Altbeker

Getting behind the statistics to offer a sober and sobering account of the scale of the crime problem and its evolution, the book describes how government has sometimes sought to deal with the crisis and sometimes sought to deny its existence. The book ends with some suggestions of what needs to be done to deal with this scourge. Buy
