Mossel Bay’s Oystercatcher Trail and the Cape Nature Tierkloof Trail in the Gamkaberg Reserve are among the thirty spectacular walks included in “Unforgettable Walks to Take Before You Die.”

The 256 page book is authored by photographers and writers Steve Watkins and Clare Jones and draws on their collective years of international travel experience.

The authors have selected thirty of the world’s most inspiring, spectacular and beautiful walks, each of which can be done within the space of a two-week break.

The Oystercatcher Trail is a three or five day walk along the largely undisturbed coastline west of Mossel Bay. The trail leads southwards towards the Gouritz River mouth.

Now a major tourist attraction in Mossel Bay, this popular trail has earned itself a series of local and international accolades. Among these is a place in Getaway’s Top 10 South African hikes as well as a spot in National Geographic Traveler’s Top 50 Tours of a Lifetime.

The Gamkaberg Rerserve is situated within the Gamka Mountain in the Little Karoo. The mountain boasts a rugged terrain with deep ravines. The trail starts in the succulent Karoo with a moderately strenuous trail.

The route then takes hikers through a deep, forested ravine to a fynbos-rich mountain plateau where hikers can rest on the Oukraal camp and look out on to the Swartberg and Outeniqua mountain ranges

Other walks included in Unforgettable Walks to Take Before You Die include walking tours along Boston’s Freedom Trail, the Peru Inca’s Trail and the picturesque canals of Amsterdam and Kilimanjaro Nature Reserve.

Unforgettable Walks to Take Before You Die is available through Kalahari.net

As I am a student, I don't have much time, apart from my holidays, to do research and write articles. I would appreciate if volunteers e.g. blog owners, freelance journalists or criminologists would allow me to place their articles (credit will be given to the author). Articles just need to be in line with the mission of the website (see About). Contact me

A country at war with itself: Antony Altbeker

Getting behind the statistics to offer a sober and sobering account of the scale of the crime problem and its evolution, the book describes how government has sometimes sought to deal with the crisis and sometimes sought to deny its existence. The book ends with some suggestions of what needs to be done to deal with this scourge. Buy
